History
Line: Vila Inhomirim
The station is the oldest in Brazil. It was opened by Irineu Evangelista de Souza, the Baron of Mauá, on the same date as the “Imperial Steam Navigation and Railway of Petrópolis”, better known as “Mauá Railway” - the first railway in Brazil. The track connected Guia de Pacobaíba, in the Port of Mauá, to Fragoso, and covered a distance of 14.5 km.
The station was chosen as a terminal because Irineu intended to transport agricultural production from the interior of the country, mainly from the Province of Minas Gerais. After research by the English surveyor William Bagge, Fragoso was chosen because of its proximity to Raiz da Serra, the most suitable place to receive the goods and load them onto the trains heading to the Port of Mauá, where they were transferred to steam ships and exported throughout the world.
The opening of Fragoso station is the same as “Railroad Day”.
