History
Line: Deodoro, Santa Cruz e Japeri
Local Attractions: Portela Samba School, Império Serrano Samba School, Jongo da Serrinha House, Madureira Market
Francisco Ignácio do Canto was the owner of Campinho Farm, which was leased by a cow rancher named Lourenço Madureira (surname of Portuguese origin, which makes reference to “madureiro”, (the place where fruit was ripened)). When the farm was subdivided to receive population centers, the Madureira neighborhood emerged, known as the “Capital of Samba” for being a stronghold of samba dancers.
In 1923, the G.R.E.S. Portela, founded by Paulo Benjamin de Oliveira (Paulo da Portela). Paulo took the train that left Central at 18:04 with the staff of the school to rehearse the samba. And this is the origin of “Trem do Samba”, an event that takes place annually in celebration of “Samba Day”.
In 1947, the G.R.E.S. Império Serrano arose (which can also be reach from the Mercadão de Madureira station).
Do you know the Dona Clara station?
Before electrification, Madureira also boasted the Dona Clara station, where there was a circular line for the trains to return to Central do Brasil. This station was where Praça do Patriarca (Patriarch's Square) now stands.
