The Derby Club, as the racetrack of one of the most important clubs in the history of Rio de Janeiro was once known, was opened in the vicinity of the Maracanã River, close to the railway line. Derby ran from 1885 until 1926, when the Jockey Club was built in Gávea. In its place, the Maracanã stadium was erected and the station also came to carry the same name.
The Indians named Maraka'nã, a combination of maraka (rattle) and nã (similar), to a species of parrot that emits a sound similar to that of a rattle.
