History
Line: Deodoro e Santa Cruz
Local Attractions: Portela Samba School
In 1917, the Rio das Pedras station (Rio means river, in this case the river that starts in Jacarepaguá and passes through the neighborhoods of Oswaldo Cruz and Rocha Miranda, and flows into the Rio Pavuna) changed its name to the Oswaldo Cruz station to honor the doctor and public health expert of the same name. An illustrious figure of the neighborhood was Paulo da Portela, who, in 1923, founded the Conjunto Oswaldo Cruz Carnival block, which was the source for GRES Portela samba school. Additionally, Paulo and his friends debuted the famous “Samba Train”, as they met at the Central do Brasil station to catch the train that left at 18:04. Inside the wooden carriages of the day, drawn by steam locomotives, they began to rehearse their sambas on the trip to Oswaldo Cruz.
