Local Attractions: Ruins of Nossa Senhora da Estrela dos Mares Church
The Parque Estrela neighborhood, in Magé, is in the region where Vila da Estrela was settled in 1650. It was very prosperous during the gold rush as it was home to Estrela Port on the Inhomirim River - the first in Brazil to take advantage of steam navigation.
Next to the porto are the ruins of the Church of Nossa Senhora da Estrela dos Mares, a Catholic saint worshiped since the year 1060 in France. The Duque de Caxias was baptized in this church.
With the construction of the first railroad in Brazil, by Barão de Mauá, in 1854, Vila da Estrela started to fall into economic decay, as products from the interior of the country, mainly coffee, started to be transported by rail, from Raiz da Serra to the port of Guia de Pacobaíba, at the bottom of Guanabara Bay.
“Parada Estrela Stop”, therefore, was opened and for many years it was known as “Parada Meia Noite” because the last train of the day that left from Barão de Mauá station to Guapimirim stopped at this station, almost always at this time.
