  • History

    Line: Deodoro e Santa Cruz

Local Attractions: Gothic Church of Divino Salvador

At the beginning of the 19th century, the region of the current Piedade neighborhood had an essentially rural characteristic. Small sites and plots of land dominated the place. Years later, after the movement of workers towards the suburbs of Rio, the neighborhood started to urbanize. And with the expansion of the railway, the region benefited from a train station: Parada Gambá.

Historians say that the station got this name, because Emperor D. Pedro II decided to stop at a place where there were several possums (gambás in Portuguese). And as the place became famous for that reason, Parada Gambá caught on”.

Those who lived in the neighborhood did not like this title at all, and at the end of the 19th century, one of the residents decided to write a letter to the director of the Central Railway of Brazil to try to change this situation: Please have pity (piedade), sir. Change the name of our little station ”. The director replied: “My lady, it shall be done”. And the name of the neighborhood will be Piedade ”. And the appeal was answered.
