  • History

    Line: Japeri

Local Attractions: Nossa Senhora da Conceição Square (Historical Heritage)

The origin of the name ‘Queimados’ has a number of versions. The first says that when Emperor Dom Pedro I passed through that region, he saw a big conflagrationcoming from the orange groves on the hills, and called the place "Morro dos Queimados" (Burning Hills). The second alleges that the name refers to the bodies of burned lepers (in order to contain the disease). The third tells of slaves who fled the farms, were killed and their bodies burned by their masters. The latest version talks of thousands of Chinese workers, brought in to build the railway, were victims of Malaria and cholera epidemics. The municipality's anthem mentions the origin of the name “Queimados”: “Our name has a history of slaves, lepers and an emperor. No matter where you come from, today you are valued!”.
