History
Line: Belford Roxo
In 1739, when Brazil was still a colony of Portugal, there was in the place where today is the Coelho da Rocha neighborhood, a farm, owned by Senhor Cristóvão Mendes Leitão. Over the years, these lands were acquired by Commander Manuel José Coelho da Rocha. In the 19th century, a great drought hit Rio de Janeiro. To facilitate the transportation of the materials used in the construction of a pipeline in Tinguá, which would supply the Court of Rio de Janeiro, the “Estrada de Ferro Rio D’Ouro” was created. The Commander, then, gave part of his land for the passage of iron pipes of this pipeline and, which until today, can be seen from the train station. Built in honor of those who, in addition to allowing tubes and trains to pass through their lands, fought hard to transport passengers from that region, the “Coelho da Rocha Station” was inaugurated.
