History
Line: Deodoro, Santa Cruz e Japeri
Local Attractions: Aerospace Museum
Opened as Sapopemba Station, a word that comes from the Tupi-Guarani meaning "vine out", the current Deodoro station, which was also called Marechal Deodoro Station, to honor Manoel Deodoro da Fonseca, was built on the farm lands that belonged to Barão de Mauá. The site was so big that, years later, it was chopped up and gave rise to the regions of Deodoro, Vila Militar and Magalhães Bastos. The home of Deodoro da Fonseca, the first president of the Republic of Brazil that gave the station its name, still exists in front of the Central do Brasil station, on the other side of Avenida Presidente Vargas, and houses a museum about his life. In addition, his image, since 1998, is stamped on the 25 cent coins.
