History
Line: Saracuruna
The name Sarapuí came from a river close to the region and which, in Tupi-Guarani, means The river of Sarapós (a species of fish that some fishermen use as bait).
In 1944, Sarapuí Station was renamed Gramacho Station, in honor of Captain João Pereira Lima Gramaxo, who had owned land in that region in the 18th century.
The captain was Portuguese and grew sugar cane on his farm, he also had a small port on the Sarapuí River to transport his harvest to Rio de Janeiro.
