History
Line: Belford Roxo
In 1858, with the opening of the Dom Pedro II Railway, now called Central do Brasil, old farms were subdivided and streets opened in the lands cleft by the Jacaré River (which comes from the indigenous term “Yacaré” and means crooked or winding). The Jacaré River, springing from Morro do Elefante (Elephant Mountain), in Tijuca National Park, has a wavy shape like the reptile and, therefore, one of the neighborhoods through which the river passes received this name.
In 1920, the neighborhood started to be urbanized and occupied. At that time, the Jacarezinho Favela began, which expanded over the years between the Jacaré River and the old Cruzeiro Factory (later General Electric - GE). In 1992, the Jacarezinho area was separated from the Jacaré neighborhood, becoming Jacarezinho.
Under the supervision of SuperVia, the station, formerly called “Vieira Fazenda Station” - in tribute to a doctor at Santa Casa de Misericórdia, and a librarian at the Brazilian Historical and Geographical Institute and historian - changed its name to the current one: Jacarezinho.
