History
Line: Deodoro e Santa Cruz
Local Attractions: Mangueira Samba School, The Museum of Samba
The powerful name of the hill that lies beside the railroad gave the station its name: Mangueira. It was the last station to be opened by inaugurated by Emperor Dom Pedro I; three months later the Republic would be formed.
The name “Jamelão” was incorporated as a tribute to the singer and composer who died in 2008, considered the greatest samba-enredo interpreter of all time.
Interesting fact - when the Central Railway of Brazil electrified its first stretch between the Central and Madureira stations, it built the first electrical energy transforming substation of the railway system in Mangueira. The substation, opened in 1937 by the then president Getúlio Vargas, is still in operation.
