History
Line: Saracuruna
Local Attractions: FIOCRUZ
In the 19th century, there was a mangrove swamp, known as “Fazenda Manguinhos”, which was owned by the Portuguese João Dias Amorim. Amorim produced charcoal att the farm for the old steam locomotives on the “Estrada de Ferro do Norte” (“Northern railway). When the “Parada Amorim” stop was inaugurated, in addition to a station, the place served as a firewood supply station.
Years later, the name “Amorim Stop” was replaced by “Carlos Chagas Station” - in homage to Carlos Chagas, the director at the time of Instituto Manguinhos (now known as FIOCRUZ ). Only in the 1930s did the site become “Manguinhos Station”.
