History
Line: Saracuruna
Local Attractions: Penha Church
The story of the Catholic saint “Nossa Senhora da Penha de França”, began in 1434, when a monk found the image of a saint on the top of a steep cliff, where Emperor Charlemagne won the battle against the Moors. The region, located in Spain, is known as “Penha de França”.
Legend has it that, in Rio de Janeiro, in 1632, there was also a very similar mysterious occurrence. Portuguese captain Baltazar de Abreu Cardoso, owner of the land in the current Penha neighborhood, climbed a bluff to see his plantations from above and ended up being confronted by a snake. The captain quickly evokes the name “Nossa Senhora da Penha de França”, to whom he is a devotee. At the exact moment a lizard appeared and attacked the snake and overcame it. In thanks and to honor the saint who saved his life, Baltazar erected a small chapel on the site.
The Penha station was opened at the foot of the famous cliff face.
