History
Line: Deodoro e Santa Cruz
Local Attractions: Igreja Matriz de São Jorge (The Mother Church of St George)
In the 19th century, on the old Fazenda da Bica (Bica Ranch), there was a quarry that supplied most of the city's building works, which belonged to a Portuguese citizen named Cupertino. The Cupertino station was created at the site to load railroad cars on the Central Railway of Brazil (EFCB).
A year later, the station's name was changed to “Doctor Frontin” in honor of the director of the railroad. At the same time, the neighborhood was chosen by the journalist, lawyer and politician, Quintino Ferreira da Souza for his new residence.
From an early age, Quintino proved to be a staunch nationalist and adopted the name “Quintino Bocayuva” at the age of 17, wanting to use a kind of coconut tree (Bocayuva) that is native to Brazil, in his name.
The “Prince of Brazilian Journalists” became an eminent politician and still during the time of the Empire, founded the Republican Party, playing a decisive role in the Proclamation of the Republic, in fact being one of its main articulators.
After his death, the station “Doutor Frontin” was renamed “Quintino Bocayuva” and, then shortened to its current name, simply “Quintino”.
