The station was named after the engineer and director of the Central Railway of Brazil José Ricardo de Albuquerque, who started his life on the railroad while still a student at the Escola de Aprendizes (Apprentice School), now called the Engenheiro Silva Freire State Technical School). As an engineer, he worked on the construction of the Madureira station.
