  • History

    Line: Santa Cruz

Local Attractions: Santa Cruz Community Eco-museum

A large, black-painted wooden cross, fixed on a stone base: the “Santa Cruz”. Erected on December 30, 1567, this monument was the source of the name of the land that was first run by the Society of Jesus (better known as the Jesuits) which became one of the largest farms in Rio de Janeiro: Fazenda Santa Cruz.

After the expulsion of the Jesuits from Brazil and later with the arrival of the Portuguese Court (in 1808), the main edifice of the farm was chosen as the summer home of King Dom João VI and was transformed into a palace.

On December 2, 1878, when Emperor Dom Pedro II turned 53 years old, the Santa Cruz line was opened, with the main stations: Realengo, Campo Grande and Santa Cruz. From that time on, he started using the train to get to his summer home.
