History
Line: Santa Cruz e Japeri
The nem of this station pays tribute to the railway engineer José Joaquim da Silva Freire, one of the people responsible for the Locomotion Workshops at Engenho de Dentro and who, on January 30, 1900, took over the board of the former “Escola Prática de Aprendizes”, founded in 1897 by Central Railway of Brazil (EFCB) with the objective of training workers to work on the railroad.
In 1906, the engineer promoted a real reform in the teaching of the school. Due to the railway expansion at the time, more and more specialized technicians were needed in the different areas in which EFCB operated. Silva Freire then instituted a pioneering model in Brazil and Latin America for vocational education.
To this day, SuperVia has on its staff alumni from the Engenheiro Silva Freire State Technical School, which is currently located next to the Deodoro Workshop.
